Vintage Original 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans Poster.
June 21 & 22, 1958.
It measures approximately:
11 x 15 inches
28 x 38 cm
This is an extremely scrace example of the 1958 24 Heures du Mans poster.
It is in more than excellent condition considering its age but, as clearly visible in the picture, it does have some fraying to the top (right) of the poster with some minor paper loss but this just adds loads of patina and character to this poster and only makes it more authentic.
The 1958 Le Mans poster is part of the so-called "Major Illustrators" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1954 - 1963 and in which the cream of the crop of French motorsport illustrators such as Geo Ham, Jeudon and Beligond were hired for the design of the race posters.
The design of the 1958 poster was by Michel Beligond and was his first work for the Le Mans 24 hours race.
Beligond was preceded by Geo Ham and Jeudon and the switch to the new artist immediately gave a more realistic rendering of the race.
The car is going into the Dunlop curve, just having passed under the famous Dunlop bridge.
The night and the crowd are of course present but Beligond is not too concerned about depicting a real race but instead shows the make that was favorite for the 1958 race, Ferrari!
The race was indeed won by Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill in their Nr. 14 Ferrari 250 TR58 with a total of 305 laps to their name.
